Discover the Joy of Christian Singles: A Guide to Finding and Building a Meaningful Relationship

When you think about dating and relationships, it’s important to remember that our relationships with Jesus should be foundational of our lives. Scripture teaches as Christians; we are to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). This requires us to put God and his desires for us above our own priorities and us and his will above our own. Trusting in his love and care while seeking to live out our faith in all areas of our lives is actually important. Our relationships are part of God’s design for and we need to trust him to guide us. As we follow Jesus’s example of love and service to others, we also must love and serve others as he did. We truly can trust in him to lead us to the right person at the right time and to bless and guide our relationships and our lives. We find joy and happiness in our relationship with Jesus, no matter who we are with or what is going on in our lives. Jesus’ love is eternal.

Considering this, let’s take a closer look at steps Christian singles are able to take in their lives and how through Jesus they can have confidence as they search for meaningful relationships and patiently work to nurture them. Jesus’ commandment to love others as oneself (Mark 12:28-34) can be lived out by doing things like caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, and showing compassion and acceptance to those who are marginalized or excluded by society.

As Christians follow Jesus’s example of love in how they live out their own lives, they desire to show love and care for their partners and others God puts on the hearts by performing acts of kindness, compassion, and service. This involves supporting and encouraging one’s partner, being patient and understanding in times of conflict, and putting the needs of one’s partner before one’s own. Having love and respect for one’s spouse or companion is easy to do but Jesus also taught about the importance of loving one’s neighbors and enemies (Matthew 5:44). Christians desire to extend this love to friends, family, and those who are hard to get along with, but what about those who hate us. Showing kindness and compassion to others, even when they may not deserve it, and being willing to forgive and extend grace to others, as Jesus did for us is what He calls us to do.

As Christians strive to view their lives through Jesus’ eyes and seek God’s will and every area of their lives, including their dating and relationships they can go before the Lord of heaven and earth and trust he has a wonderful plan for you. The Bible encourages believers to bring their requests and needs to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6–7) and to seek guidance and direction in finding a spouse. Christians may pray specifically for wisdom and guidance in finding the right person, and also ask for God’s help in staying true to his will and values as they navigate the dating process. In addition to praying for guidance, Christians may also seek advice and support from trusted mentors or leaders, such as pastors, youth leaders, or older, married couples. These individuals can offer wisdom, encouragement, and prayerful support as the individual seeks to follow God’s will in their dating life.

Another important factor to consider when seeking a romantic partner is compatibility and shared values. While chemistry and attraction are certainly important, it is also important to look for someone who shares your faith and values, and who is committed to living out their faith together. The Bible encourages believers to seek out companions who will help them grow in their faith and who will support and encourage them in living out their values (Proverbs 13:20). Christians may want to consider these factors when seeking a romantic partner, as they strive to build a meaningful and godly relationship. As Christians navigate through the relationship process, they may want to be mindful of the importance of making wise and godly decisions. This can involve seeking the guidance of trusted mentors or leaders, as well as seeking counsel from the Word of God. The Bible provides wisdom and guidance on how to approach these stages of a romantic relationship, including the importance of maintaining sexual purity (1 Corinthians 6:18), being honest and transparent with one’s partner (Ephesians 4:25), and seeking the will of God in all matters (Proverbs 3:5–6).

Christians may want to consider these principles as they make decisions about courtship and engagement, seeking to build a strong and godly foundation for their future marriage. So as Christian singles pursue finding and building a meaningful romantic relationship, they can look to Jesus as a model for how to love and serve others, seek God’s will and guidance, and make wise and godly decisions. May we trust in God to lead us to the right person at the right time and to bless and guide our relationships. And may we find joy and contentment in our relationship with Jesus, knowing that he has a good and perfect plan for our lives.
